Southern Ohio Speedway Revises 2016 Schedule; June 3rd Races Cancelled

Thursday, June 2nd, 2016
sos3a

WHEELERSBURG, OH-After doing much evaluation, the Southern Ohio Speedway has made the decision to revise it’s 2016 schedule and go to a special events only schedule.  This means that the races scheduled for this Friday, June 3rd are cancelled and the scheduled off week for June 10th will remain in effect.  The track is in the process of scheduling the special events for this season and will announce the upcoming events at a later time.

The decision to move to this type of schedule was a very difficult one.  The track has tried almost everything to make a financially viable weekly show but has not had success.  These attempts include a massive project to reconfigure the track, paying some of the highest weekly purses in the country, offering family friendly ticket pricing, and offering various fan and driver promotions.  While weekly programs, especially this season, have produced great racing, it has become harder and harder to get the attendance numbers needed to make weekly racing programs work.  There is so much expense that goes into a race outside of what is seen as the numbers needed to make these shows work are quite large.

Special events have always drawn good attendance numbers while weekly shows have always been a struggle to get a lot of interest.  As the economy within our racing community has got worse and more race cars have been parked while even more race teams run a limited schedule, it has become all that much harder to draw interest in weekly racing programs. With car count based purses this season the track tried to get the cost down low enough to run weekly shows but it has not panned out.

Several other speedways in the area have switched to a limited, special event type schedule.  While every track would no doubt love to be racing every week, business decisions have to be made to keep action going at the track.  We look forward to some more exciting, high quality events this season.  We have had some excellent special event races in the past and look forward to some more great ones moving forward.

Please stay tuned to our website at www.southernohiospeedway.com and our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/southernohiospeedway for upcoming race information.

Nuckles, Dickson, Taylor, Jordan, Piquet win May 27th!

WHEELERSBURG, OH-It was a hot 90 degree day at the Southern Ohio Speedway on Friday, May 27th as the action on track was just as hot!  Lots of great racing took place on a night that saw 4 of the 5 classes open wheel classes.

In the OVSCA 410 Sprint Car feature, polesitter Jesse McCreary jumped out to the lead until a caution flag flew on lap two for a spinning Wes McGlumphy.  On the restart, several cars checked up and piled up with Josh Davis tumbling going into turn three.  The wreck also took out David Smith and R. J. Perkins.  All drivers were ok.  When the race resumed, McCreary jumped out to the lead with Andre Layfield in second, Bryan Nuckles in third, and Danny Smith in fourth.  Within about five laps, the top four cars were all within one second of each other as McCreary and Layfield battled side by side for the lead!  The battle for the lead was intense and lasted for several laps.  Coming off of turn four to complete lap 10, Layfield got a huge run on McCreary and jumped to the inside of him in turn one to go side by side.  In the middle of the turn the two made heavy contact, getting hooked together and crashing off of turn two.  Thankfully no cars got airbone and all drivers were ok, but the top two cars were out of the race.

That left the lead to Columbus, Ohio’s Bryan Nuckles with National Sprint Car Hall of Famer Danny Smith in second.  On the restart, Nuckles quickly jumped out to a big lead and maneuvered lap traffic to come to the checkers and take the big win!  Danny Smith finished second with Dave Dickson third, Ronnie Blair fourth, and Jamie Myers in fifth.  McCreary and Layfield won heat races.

It was another great feature race in the AMRA Modified feature that took a crazy turn at the end.  It was an intense battle for the lead from the start between Brian Skaggs and Travis Dickson.  Dickson made the pass on Skaggs on lap four and pulled out to a sizeable lead.  In a race with few cautions the race spread out with Dickson leading Skaggs second, and Eric Hatfield third.  With a couple laps to go, cars started slowing as out of nowhere rain started falling on the speedway!  The field came to complete the checkered with Travis Dickson taking his first career SOS feature win!  Brian Skaggs finished second with Eric Hatfield third, Adam Colley fourth, and Steve Cruse fifth.  Skaggs and Hatfield won heat races.

The rain only lasted a few minutes and the track was ran in to complete the rest of the racing program.  Next up was the Ohio Thunder RaceSaver 305 Sprint Car A-Main.  This race saw a great battle for the lead between Jim Lewis and New Jersey driver Jeff Taylor!  The two battled for the lead for the opening laps in a great battle for the lead with Taylor making the pass on lap four.  The race slowed a few laps later as the #01 car of Dustin Hamond got upside down in turn two.  Thankfully, he was ok.  When the race resumed Taylor went on to lead the remaining laps and take the win!  Jim Lewis finished second with Andy Hill third, Michael Ebeisbach fourth, and Jay Dunaway fifth.  Lewis and Hill won heat races.

Emily Jordan dominated the nights 15 lap Sport Mod A-Main to take her second consecutive feature win!  Eric Dennison finished second with Danny Hamilton third, Zack Vanhoose fourth, and Allan Hunt fifth.  Robert Pigeut won another wild Enduro that saw a great battle for the lead between him and Robbie Matheny.

The Southern Ohio Speedway will be back in action this Friday, June 3rd for Meet The Drivers Night featuring AMRA Late Models, AMRA Modifieds, Fastrak Crate Late Models, Sport Mods, and an Enduro.  Gates will open at 4:00 pm with hot laps at 7:15 pm.  General admission is $12 (ages 17 and up), $5 (ages 13-16), $2 (ages 7-12), and FREE (ages 6 and under).

sprints

WHEELERSBURG, OH-For the first time since June of 2014, Sprint Cars return to Southern Ohio Speedway and return in a big way this Friday, May 27th for Open Wheel Night!  The jam packed racing card will feature the OVSCA 410 Sprint Cars, Ohio RaceSaver 305 Sprint Cars, Southern Ohio Lightning Mini-Sprints, AMRA Modifieds, Sport Mods, and an Enduro at the end of the night!

There is a lot of anticipation for the first Sprint Car event on the new track configuration.  The new track configuration is expected to produce some great racing in the Sprint Car divisions.  Expect to see lots of slide jobs through turns 1 and 2 as we’ve seen a higher groove be the preferred groove in that turn.

It will be an exciting night for fans of open wheel racing as 5 of the 6 classes are open wheel cars!  The fast and powerful OVSCA 410 Sprint Cars will no doubt set a new track record for the new track configuration.  The OVSCA has always put on a great show at SOS with Jim Nier, Kory Crabtree, and Taylor Ferns previous winners in the OVSCA Sprints.  The RaceSaver 305 Sprints have a little less horsepower than the 410’s but always put on great racing.  The Mini-Sprints are midget chassis with wings and powered by motorcycle engines.  They put on great racing as well as the AMRA Modified and Sport Mod divisions that always put on great show at SOS.

It will be a great deal for the fans as you can see all of this action for general admission prices of $12 (ages 17 and up), $5 (ages 13-16), $2 (ages 7-12), and FREE (ages 6 and under)!  Pit passes are $3o (ages 13 and up), $20 (ages 7-12), and FREE (ages 6 and under).  Gates will open at 4:00 pm with hot laps at 7:15 pm.  For more information visit www.southernohiospeedway.com.

*The standard OVSCA payout ($1,500 to win, $200 to start) and standard Ohio RaceSaver 305 and Southern Ohio Lightning Mini-Sprint purses and weekly SOS AMRA Modified, Sport Mod, and Enduro purses will be used.*

May 20th races cancelled due to rainy forecast; Next race May 27th

Friday, May 20th, 2016

After evaluating the forecast for tomorrow, we are going to go ahead and cancel tomorrow’s races. We feel with a 90-100% chance of rain all of tomorrow evening and night that there will be no window to get the show in. We have cancelled early to prevent everyone from coming to the track only to get rained out likely before hot laps would even start according to forecast.

Our next race will be next Friday, May 27th for Open Wheel Night. It will be a good one with OVSCA 410 Sprints, RaceSaver 305 Sprints, Southern Ohio Lightning Mini-Sprints, AMRA Modifieds, Sport Mods, and an Enduro.

Breeding, Keenan, Jordan, Matheny win on May 6th!

Saturday, May 7th, 2016
breeding56

WHEELERSBURG, OH-It was another exciting night of racing at the Southern Ohio Speedway on Friday, May 6th for Little League Night.  Picture perfect weather greeted spectators and race teams as the third race of the season got underway.

The nights AMRA Late Model feature got exciting right from the start as Stephen Breeding, Robbie Lewis, and Billy Gullion went three wide for the lead off of turn two!  Breeding came out of the turn with the lead with Gullion right on his tail in second.  Off of turn four Breeding and Gullion then battled side by side for the lead to complete lap one!  After a couple of laps of battling, Breeding using highside momentum maintained the lead with Gullion in second and a great battle for third between Derek Fisher and Kevin Wagner.  Those two swapped the third position several times in the first half of the race.

A lot of eyes were also on three time SOS track champion and last weeks winner R. J. Conley in the #71c.  Conley was forced to start the race next to last because of a flat tire in his heat race. The Wheelersburg, Ohio driver moved steadily through the field and by lap 6 had made his way up to the top five.  After a great battle with Kevin Wagner, Conley moved into the fourth position on lap 12 then set his sights on third place runner Derek Fisher.  Conley got by Fisher with four laps remaining in the race to move up to third.

Up front, it was all Isom, Kentucky’s Stephen Breeding as he stretched his lead out to come to the checkers and lead every lap of the caution free race to take his first career SOS win!  Billy Gullion had a career SOS best finish of second with hard charger R. J. Conley in third, Derek Fisher in fourth, and Kevin Wagner in fifth.  Robbie Lewis and Stephen Breeding won heat races.

The nights AMRA Modified feature saw a lot of action as polesitter Eric Hatfield took the lead from the start with fourth place starter Clint Keenan moving into the second position by lap two.  A caution flew on lap six for Cody Mayabb who got into the wall of turn four.  On the restart, Keenan looked underneath of Hatfield to go side by side for the lead!  Coming off of turn two on lap six Keenan got underneath Hatfield in turn two to take the lead.  Hatfield wasn’t done though as he looked back underneath of Keenan in turn three.  Coming off of turn four the two made contact with both cars sideways!  Somehow they both kept going without spinning with Keenan leading, Hatfield in second, and Brian Skaggs in third.

As the laps wore on in the race, Keenan maintained a 1-2 car length lead over Hatfield with Skaggs right on the bumper of Hatfield, battling side by side for several laps.  Keenan started to pull away some in the latter portion of the race until a caution fell with 2 laps to go, setting up a green-white-checkered finish.  On the restart, Keenan pulled out to a few car length lead with  great side by side battle for second between Hatfield and Skaggs.  Keenan would come off of turn four on the final lap to take his first career SOS win with Eric Hatfield in second, Brian Skaggs third, Jimmy Adams fourth, and Joe Hamon in fifth.  Eric Hatfield and Brian Skaggs won heat races.

Yet another exciting race took place in the Sport Mod division.  Polesitter Emily Jordan jumped out to the lead with last weeks winner Danny Hamilton in second.  Jordan and Hamilton then went into a side by side battle for the lead that lasted for multiple laps.  Jordan ran the middle of the track with Hamilton running the low side in what was a close, exciting race.  Eric Dennison was right behind them in third as you could of thrown a blanken over the top three cars!  Several times the three drivers were just inches apart from each other in the battle for the lead and second place but never made contact in a great show of driving.  Jordan maintained the lead through all of the laps of battling and towards the latter stages of the feature developed a 3-4 car length lead.

Just like in the AMRA Modified feature, a caution flag would fly with two laps remaining setting up another green-white-checkered finish.  On the restart, something happened to second place runner Danny Hamilton’s car as his car was not up to full song.  That allowed Eric Dennison to move into second place and have a shot for the win on the final lap!  Dennison pushed hard, but Jordan was able to maintain her two car length lead to come to the checkers and take her first SOS win this season!  Eric Dennison finished second with Tony Whitt third, Zack Vanhoose fourth, and Danny Hamilton fifth.  Emily Jordan and Danny Hamilton won heat races.

It was another exciting Enduro as Robbie Matheny and the #8up car swapped the lead a couple of times in the event with Justin McNutt running in third.  Matheny would take the lead for good around the halfway mark and come to the checkers to take the win!

The Southern Ohio Speedway will be off this upcoming Friday, May 13th for the first scheduled off weekend of the season.  The track will be back in action on Friday, May 20th for Kids Night featuring AMRA Late Models, AMRA Modifieds, Sport Mods, Fastrak Crate Late Models, and an Enduro.  With Kids Night, all kids 12 and under will get in general admission free.  General admission is $12 for ages 17 and up and $5 for ages 13-16.  Pit passes are $30 for ages 13 and up, $20 for ages 7-12, and free for ages 6 and under.  Gates will open at 4:00 pm with hot laps at 7:15 pm.

Conley, Rupe, Hamilton, Howard win Charlie Floyd Memorial Benefit on April 29th!

Saturday, April 30th, 2016
rj429

WHEELERSBURG, OH-It was a very special night at the Southern Ohio Speedway on Friday, April 29th, as we raced in memory of Charlie Floyd with lots of fundraising efforts to raise money for the family.  Fundraising efforts included a huge raffle and 50/50 from the Porter Township Fire Department, sponsorship program from the track, and many vendors on hand who contributed.  All efforts were successful in raising a lot of money for the family.

In the nights 25 lap AMRA STARS Late Model A-Main, polesitter R. J. Conley stormed into the lead with Stephen Breeding in second and April 15th winner Kevin Wagner in third.  The racing from fourth on back was as intense as you will see between Robbie Lewis, Mark Frazier, Bill Staker, and Travis Brookover.  As the race reached it’s halfway mark, Breeding began to cut into R. J. Conley’s 10 car length lead he had held for most of the race.  By the time the race got to 5 laps to go, Breeding had cut Conley’s lead down to three car lengths as the two both split lapped cars going three wide!  Conley was able to get through the traffic first and win by about five car lengths over Breeding in second!  Kevin Wagner finished third with Mark Frazier fourth, and Robbie Lewis fifth.  Conley and Breeding won heat races.

It was a very emotional victory lane as Charlie’s dad Charlie Floyd Sr., fiance Quin Rosenburg, and many members of the Floyd family joined the Conley crew in victory lane.  After the victory lane ceremonies, Conley had Charlie Floyd Sr. drive his car back to the pits as Conley walked through the grandstands, greeting fans going back to the pits.

The nights 20 lap AMRA Modified A-Main was some of the most intense Modified action that has been seen at SOS.  At the start, the field went four wide battling for positions within the top five!  Polesitter Jesse Rupe led with Eric Hatfield right on his rear in second.  On lap two, while battling for the lead, Hatfield spun off of turn four but all cars avoided him and everyone continued.  When the race resumed, Rupe jumped out to about a six car length lead while the battle for second was intense between Mark Dickson and Brian Skaggs.  The two battled lap after lap with Dickson running the middle and Skaggs the bottom.  The two made contact going into turn three on lap 16 with both cars retiring from the race after the accident.

When the race resumed, new second place runner Clint Keenan took a look underneath of Rupe on the restart and then Rupe pulled away by 6-7 car lengths to come to the checkers and take the win!  Keenan finished second with Brandon Smith third, Eric Hatfield fourth, and David McWilliams fifth.  Rupe and Joe Hamon won heat races.

The nights 15 lap Sport Mod A-Main was full of action.  Completing lap one, race leader Eric Dennison and second place runner Emily Jordan made contact with both cars spinning and having to go to the tail.  On the restart, Tony Whitt inherited the lead and had a great battle for the lead with second place runner Danny Hamilton.  By lap five, Jordan moved her way into the third position to make it a three car battle for the lead with Whitt leading!  Hamilton was able to get by Whitt and take the lead with Jordan following him to move into second.  Hamilton led the remaining laps to take the win with Jordan in second, Whitt in third, Derek Richmond fourth, and Zack Vanhoose fifth.

Tim Howard passed Robbie Matheny on lap number five of the 10 lap shootout segment to win the Enduro.  A total of 18 Enduro cars was on hand.

The Southern Ohio Speedway returns to action this Friday, May 6th for Little League Night.  All Little League baseball/softball players in uniform will get in free.  The exciting racing card will feature AMRA Late Models, AMRA Modifieds, Sport Mods, Fastrak Crate Late Models, and an Enduro.  Gates open at 4:00 pm with hot laps at 7:15 pm.  General admission is $12 (ages 17 and up), $5 (ages 13-16), $2 (ages 7-12), and FREE (ages 6 and under).  Pit passes are $30 (ages 13 and up), $20 (ages 7-12), and FREE (ages 6 and under).
